February 2021 Citizens of the Month

Superintendent David Lewis was able to visit classrooms across the district this month to congratulate our February 2021 Citizens of the Month. Students are honored monthly based on their actions inside and outside of the classroom at school. They are nominated by their teachers. Usually, students are able to invite their families to a pizza lunch to recognize their achievement. This year, students are being recognized in front of their peers, with a certificate and coupons.

NCS Board to evaluate purchase of State Farm building

The Newark Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday, Feb. 17, to explore the possibility of purchasing the State Farm Building at 1440 Granville Road. The resolution gives the district 90 days to evaluate the potential purchase of the property. The property would allow the district to consolidate preschool classrooms, provide future opportunities for students, and explore business and community partnerships. Newark City Schools’ Board and district officials will complete a financial and comprehensive building condition analysis, as to whether it could fit current and future district needs in a cost-effective manner. During a preliminary analysis, adding on approximately 25,000 square feet to an existing building would cost between $7 and $8 million.

NCS to offer meals at no cost for kids through Dec. 31

Newark City Schools will be offering lunch and breakfast to children ages 2 to 18 at no cost, once per day starting Tuesday, Sept. 8. This is because the USDA passed a ruling to allow us to serve at no cost 1 lunch and 1 breakfast a day Monday through Friday, through December 31. Meals will continue to be served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at our buildings while students are learning virtually. Students can pick up 1 lunch and 1 breakfast meal daily between those times. Once we return to in-person classes, meals will be offered at regularly scheduled times for all students at no charge.

NCS to return to in-person classes week of Sept. 28

When Newark City Schools made the decision to start the 2020-21 school year virtually, the top priority was to keep students and staff safe while providing a quality education. We have been encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases within our district boundaries during the past month. As a result, NCS currently plans to transition back to in-person learning for all students the week of September 28. Students in Pre-K through grade 2 will start Sept. 28; grades Pre-K through 6, and 9, will attend Sept. 29; and the full district will attend on Sept. 30. Please click here for more information.

We will continue to work with the health department to evaluate data and information during the weeks following Labor Day. The district will notify families of any changes by Mon., Sept. 21.

Students will return to school in phases:

  • Mon., Sept. 28: Pre-K, Kindergarten, grades 1, 2

  • Tues., Sept. 29: Pre-K, Kindergarten, grades 1, 2, 34, 5, 6 and 9

  • Wed., Sept. 30:  All students in-school, grades Pre-K through 12
