Free & Reduced Meal Application

The USDA has extended the No Charge school meal for the entire 2021-2022 school year for school districts that participate in the NSLP. Each student is allowed one breakfast and one lunch meal each school day at no charge.
So WHY fill out a Free & Reduced application?
The Newark City Schools Food Service Department participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and applications are a requirement to be part of the program. A submitted, approved application could qualify your child for Free or Reduced status and the following:

  1. When an application is submitted and approved for Free meals, the School Instructional Fees are waived at the end of the school year*
  2. All applications help Newark schools with Title I funding
  3.  All applications help Newark schools with Technology funding
  4. P-EBT: These funds which are provided from the NSLP are only sent to those students who qualify for Free or Reduced meals. School eligibility guidelines have varied the past school year. We are unsure at this time if P-EBT will be issued and or what conditions must be met.

Incoming Kindergarteners for 21-22: DATE CHANGES

Families of incoming kindergarten students will receive a letter in the USPS the week of 8/8/21 with an appointment for a screening appointment for each student. The screening dates will be August 19, 20, 23 and 24. A parent/guardian and the child will attend this brief screening appointment only on one of the three days. If you have not received your letter, feel free to call the office to inquire about your screening time.

After screenings are complete, kindergarten students will attend ONE of three phase-in days, which allow staff and students to become acquainted in a small group setting. The phase in days will be August 25, 26 and 27.

The first full day for ALL kindergartners will be Monday, August 30th.

Volunteering Opportunities at Hillview

We have many opportunities for volunteers here at Hillview from classroom parties to PTA events like the Bookfair, helping hands are needed. Newark City Schools requires that all volunteers complete a volunteer application form before working with students. Please complete the form and turn it in to the school office as soon as possible to allow for processing time.

Thank You!

1-to-1 device initiative launching in the fall

Every student in Newark City Schools will have access to a computer during the 2021-22 school year and beyond through a one-to-one device initiative. The district has purchased more than 3,100 Chromebooks with grant money — enough for every student in grades 6-12 — and will use existing devices to provide in-school access to all elementary students. The $1.2 million purchase is made possible through many grants: $419,000 from the City of Newark’s COVID-relief funds; $535,000 from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund; and $270,000 from Special Education funds.

April 2021 Citizens of the Month

Superintendent David Lewis was able to visit classrooms across the district this month to congratulate our April 2021 Citizens of the Month. Students are honored monthly based on their actions inside and outside of the classroom at school. They are nominated by their teachers. Usually, students are able to invite their families to a pizza lunch to recognize their achievement. This year, students are being recognized in front of their peers, with a certificate and coupons. Find pictures of the students by clicking here.
