NCS Board to evaluate purchase of State Farm building

The Newark Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday, Feb. 17, to explore the possibility of purchasing the State Farm Building at 1440 Granville Road. The resolution gives the district 90 days to evaluate the potential purchase of the property.

The property would allow the district to consolidate preschool classrooms, provide future opportunities for students, and explore business and community partnerships.

Newark City Schools’ Board and district officials will complete a financial and comprehensive building condition analysis, as to whether it could fit current and future district needs in a cost-effective manner. During a preliminary analysis, adding on approximately 25,000 square feet to an existing building would cost between $7 and $8 million.

Currently, the district’s preschool program includes three units each at Hillview Elementary, Cherry Valley Elementary and Flying Colors, plus one unit at Head Start. A consolidated preschool would free up space at the elementary schools and allow the district to stop renting space at Flying Colors.

More information will be shared as the process moves forward.
