NCS offers student lunches for no charge through Dec. 16, 2022
Newark City Schools will offer student lunches for no charge for the remainder of the first semester.

The data upload issue that caused the district to offer no-cost meals during the first two weeks of school has been fixed. However, after evaluating the first two weeks of school, district officials determined that it can offer student lunches for no charge through December 16.

“We are thankful to our community for its continued support,” Superintendent David Lewis said. “We are in the fortunate position to be able to help ease the financial burden for our families at this time.”

This decision comes on the heels of the Board of Education waiving instructional fees for students for the 2022-23 school year. Instructional fees have previously been $28 to $36 for elementary students, up to $50 for middle school students and $70 or more for some high school students, depending on their courses. The only fee assessed for all students for the 2022-23 school year is a $40 technology fee.

“It is the privilege of the board to help our community,” Board President Tim Carr said. “We will continue to evaluate anything we can do to help.”

Even though meals are currently offered at no charge for all students, it is important for families to fill out Free and Reduced Price Lunch forms. Please click here to fill out the form online. In addition to the food service budget, these forms affect district funding for technology, Title 1 and more departments that positively impact all Newark City Schools students. Additionally, any families who qualify for free lunches can have their fees waived.

A la carte options are not currently available for purchase. Lunch charges will resume on January 2, 2023, for the beginning of the second semester.
