Back-to-school plan for 2020-21

The following information was shared with parents through an email from Superintendent David Lewis on Wed., Aug. 5:

Newark City School District students will begin the year in fully online classes, with opportunities for individual and small group instruction provided in-person. Teachers have been provided with professional development opportunities this summer to improve the online learning experience. There will be more teacher-student interaction through these online platforms.

This plan was developed through listening to all groups. The NCS Board of Education met on Tues., Aug. 4, to discuss and approve the plan. The district will continue to work with the health department and evaluate the situation weekly, with the goal of returning to school in-person as soon as possible.

At this time, we feel this is the most responsible and safe way to address the start of the school year for staff and students. We know that our students need to be in school.

If you have already registered for Newark Digital Academy and would like to return to your home school, you can do this. Please note that we may return to in-person schooling. The only way to guarantee that your child is online for a full semester or the entire school year will be through NDA.

Small group and individual services will be provided in a number of ways, including IEP, Title, enrichment, tutoring, gifted and more. Any students meeting in-person will wear masks, and will practice social distancing. We are also working to provide busing for students who are receiving these services as needed.

Meals will also be provided for students daily.

We are following the guidelines from OHSAA and the state regarding extra-curriculars and athletics.

More information will be coming to parents soon. These details will be shared on our website and directly with parents. We will also be creating a Frequently Asked Questions page on our website. If you have any questions regarding this plan, please submit them through this form, and we will do our best to address them.
