Bed Bug Resources

Bed bugs are a nuisance, and are occasionally brought into a school building on a student or students. Newark City Schools staff is trained to spot and contain bed bugs if they are found. The district has been in contact with the Licking County Health Department for assistance in identifying and communicating about bed bugs.

Bed bugs do not live or thrive in a school building. They prefer dark places. They can "hitch hike," however, from home in clothing or bookbags.

In the past, the health department has assisted us in inspecting our buildings. The department has resources on its own website, and there are many other resources available.

From the Licking County Health Department:

“The source of bed bugs often cannot be determined. They are found in numerous places such as hotels, planes, and movie theaters. It is unlikely for bed bugs to be spread in a school setting.”

“Bed bugs are a nuisance, and they are not known to spread disease. They are nocturnal and normally only feed at night. Bed bug bites generally do not hurt, but they can become swollen and itch, similarly to a mosquito bite. The bites can become infected by scratching them. We recommend washing the area with soap and water frequently to prevent an infection. If you suspect a bite is infected, you should contact your healthcare provider for treatment options.”
